Summer is finally here! Memorial Day is the official start of the summer season with vacations, lazy weekends and soaking in the beauty of Flagstaff. We live in a four-season hiking haven. Our region offers something for every type of hiker. Whether you’re looking for a challenging summit or a leisurely nature stroll, these 10 hikes near Flagstaff are our family favorites and are well worth the trek.
1. Humphreys Peak – Tackle Arizona’s tallest mountain (12,633 ft) on this 10.5-mile climb with jaw-dropping summit views. Start early as the hike is challenging and you’ll want to spend time at the summit soaking in the views. Be sure to take plenty of water and snacks.
2. Inner Basin Trail – A local favorite in fall, this 3.4-mile trail winds through vibrant aspen groves in Lockett Meadow. Though Forest Road 552 is closed to motor vehicles, visitors may use the road to hike to Lockett Meadow. Be aware that it is 2.8 miles one-way from the parking area at the bottom (7,600 ft.) to Lockett Meadow (8,500 ft).
3. Fatmans Loop – Just 2.4 miles, this moderate trail around Mt. Elden features scenic vistas and quirky rock formations. Highlights on this trail include alligator junipers that are over 900 years old and a 500,000 year-old lava flow.
4. Walnut Canyon Island Trail – A short 1-mile loop with ancient cliff dwellings and canyon overlooks. Part of the National Parks, there is a fee. Dogs are not allowed. The trail is moderately strenuous with stairs to climb. The views and cliff dwellings make the extra effort worth it.
5. Kachina Trail – A peaceful 10-mile forested route perfect for summer hikes beneath the San Francisco Peaks. Bring a picnic lunch and spend the day.
6. Lava River Caves – Explore a mile-long underground lava tube; wear sturdy shoes, a jacket and bring a flashlight! The temperature in these caves stays at a constant 45° Fahrenheit in the summer.
7. Buffalo Park Trail – A flat 2-mile loop with open skies, wildlife, and views of Mt. Elden—great for all skill levels. This trail is within the city limits and has plenty of parking.
8. Old Caves Crater Trail – A 4-mile moderate hike to a volcanic crater and historic lava caves.
9. Fisher Point Trail – A 5-mile forested trail ending at a cliffside overlook and seasonal caves.
10. Aspen Corner to Snowbowl – This scenic 5-mile stretch bursts with color in autumn and panoramic mountain views year-round.
